Steam and Rain (34th Street)

with 13 comments

Raining all day which usually is the only thing that gets me out of the house.  I was going to do the Empire State Building in the rain but ended up shooting a series on this street corner.  I’m being extra careful with the 40D now - keeping it under an umbrella as it’s my only camera and it may be some time before I can afford the next one which after all my back-and-forth will be the 5D II.

  1. You might as well hold off until after Xmas for the 5D2. Consumer spending is down because of the economy, and DSLR sales have been flat the last quarter or two, prices of new models are dropping (the just-released Nikon D700 is now seeing a $300 instant rebate!), and Nikon is rumored to come out with a 5D2 competitor in Jan/Feb — a 20+mp FX camera that’s D700 or better in specs. That will make all the full frame models compete more on price.

But if you want a full frame camera, why not just get a new 5D for $1900? Look at dpreview’s Sony A900 (full-frame 24MP) review, and see how the 5D meets or beats it in image quality:

12MP 5D image quality trumps most other cameras period (although it doesn’t shoot as fast, or have as good a menu system, or as advanced an AF, etc). These days you can get a used 5D from a top seller like KEH for the price of a new 50D. Something to think about, as long as you don’t need video or the extra MP….

  2. Elliot makes a sound case. I’m very pleased with my 5D and prime L lenses.

  3. 2 things:

    1.

    * That first link compared jpegs. Here’s the comparison between RAW images from the two cameras:

    2.

Twice while visiting this page I got an ‘Error Connecting to Database’ message, and was able to get to the blog by [R]eloading the page a couple of times.

  4. Elliot — Yes, something to think about for sure. Whatever I do - it won’t be until after Christmas.

And I’m also getting the database connection error. Don’t know what that’s about… see if it fixes itself by tomorrow or else I’ll have to look into it.

  5. FYI, just happened again on my first visit back.

    “Error establishing a database connection”

[R]eload page and the page loaded…..

As for the 5D, you won’t be able to find new models in the new year, I think. Manufacturing stopped, stock is low and then it will be gone. Low price (Adorama) is $100 over the lowest price it was ever at (a couple of months ago, when Canon offered $300 instant rebates), and a lot of stores with remaining stock have it for $2200 or more. Of course, if you’re willing to buy used you can wait as long as you want.

  7. Dave, are you using one of the caching plug-ins for wordpress? wordpress is notorious for being a resource hog out of the box.

  8. Markus - not that I’m aware of. Am I supposed to?

    I’m using the following plug-ins:
    Social Bookmark
    Askimet
    All In One SEO Pack
    Get Recent Comments
    Google XML Sitemaps
    SEO Friendly Images
    Wordpress Stats
    php-MyAdmin

(I just deactivated: MyAdmin, Stats, All In One SEO Pack and SEO Friendly Images)

It seems faster to me now.

  9. WP-Cache can make a huge difference (it’s the first plug-in I install after getting Wordpress up).
