Although the snow is beginning to get on my nerves (there's some more coming tomorrow) - it almost always gets me to get off the cozy futon, no matter what is on the t.v. and go out with whatever camera I'm using at the time. I keep the camera in the bag, as much as I can, but it always ends up getting soaked. When I first got into digital I was pretty nervous about getting the camera (300D right now) wet, but I've been through a few storms (rain and snow) with it, stayed out for several hours at a time, and gotten the thing pretty well soaked without any problems. I don't think I'd take it on my next geographic special up Mt. Highest, but it can stay out about as long as I can.

When I get back in I carefully clean it off with paper towels. My thought at this point is that if I can't shoot what I want with it - there's no reason to own it.

There will be virtually no crime in Central Park for the next two weeks because hundreds of extra police officers will be deployed durng the dismantling of Christos Gates. The show of force should discourage anyone from thinking "that because the event is ending the gates are available for the taking," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters.

Police have teamed with park enforcement and private security to protect the installation during its 16-day run. Surveillance cameras, including some in helicopters and high-rises on the park's perimeter, have sent live feeds of "The Gates" to a police command center. At the command headquarters, officers, specially trained to overcome extreme boredom, have been trained as gate-watchers. Commissioner Kelly said there was no truth to the story that several of the gate-watchers have been hospitalized in a catatonic state.

When all the gates are safely dismantled and recycled, in line with an environmentally friendly disposal plan, the extra police will be pulled from the park and the normal muggings and assaults will resume. One mugger, who asked that his name be withheld, accused Christo of threatening the livelihood of ordinary New Yorkers with his conceptual elitism. He added that he intends to sue Christo and the city if he does not meet his usual quota of pocketbooks and wallets in the next few weeks.

Officials at eBay, under pressure from the Bloomberg administration, have agreed not to allow any sale of purported gates souvenirs on their website. If my Aunt Thelma wants to sell her orange curtains and call them saffron, thats her business, stated one eBay official, but if she claims that Christo made them, well shut her down.

The 5,200 tons of steel used to make the bases for the gates will be melted down for reuse in Christos next conceptual art project, which will be a hula-hoop ten miles in circumference, to be kept constantly in motion for two weeks by 100,000 Sister of Charity nuns clad in saffron habits. I want to make a major religious statement, announced Christo.

All in all, the Gates brought an unexpected windfall to the city, more than doubling the expected tourist income. How much of that income will go out again to pay for dismantling the project and providing extra security to make sure none of it is stolen has not yet been calculated. One angry protester was led away in handcuffs screaming, You can make the park safe for curtains, but you cant make it safe for people. Commissioner Kelly smiled and called her a low-brow philistine, as a surveillance helicopter swooped down and ruffled the orange fabrics of the gates.
