Black and White Photography, New York: Sunday, February 06, 2005

74th Street, Fifth Avenue
74th Street & Fifth Avenue

This is a multiple post-shot exposure. Actually, three shots, each done without moving the tripod. The runner that begins in the right lower corner, is the same runner in the middle, and then stretching against a tree. From a photoshop point of view it is simple to do without masking, by using the 'darken' option in blending the layers. I realized the other day, that you could get some interesting motion effects by keeping the tripod still and letting people move through the frame. This comes out of the fooling around with montage, because that was where I first began to really play with layers. Seems to me that it opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of movement studies.

Item: I was interviewed for Inked Magazine which will be soon publishing their first hardcopy issue. Interview took about an hour and a half - and there were some surprisingly good questions that had me thinking and in some cases stumped. Like the last question: If there was one impression you'd like visitors to your site to take away with them, what would that be?

I was like - man, I don't really know. Let me think about that.

And eventually came up with something like, even if I did know, I'm not sure that I would tell. I just try to put it out there and people will come away with what they see in it. Or something like that.

I think that I was a bit like President Bush being asked what mistakes he had made and/or what he would have done differently.

Hmm. Let me think 'bout that.

But what is amazing is that after publishing the site for over five years, I didn't have a ready answer to that.

At any rate, the interviewer wanted to know if there was an easier way to go through the blog - to jump back to the beginning and go through it from start to finish, which is why I just added the two links on the left for the blog archives. In the old days, I used to have something like that, but when I switched to Radioland - they didn't have that. Now I'm wondering if there is some switch in Radioland to turn on back years.

What did come out - often - in the interview - was that my influences were not usually photographers (other than for technique lessons from Ansel) but black and white movies. That isn't surprising, given my film background - but it was surprising to hear myself voicing that outloud.

When the magazine is published, I will definitely put a note up in the blog about it.

Item: The Christos Gates are scheduled to open in Central Park on Saturday Feb. 12th and be up until Feb. 27th.  I have to admit that I'm really looking forward to this, much more than to some stuffy exhibit in a museum.  There is just something audacious, possibly New York audacious about this.
