Black and White Photography, New York: Friday, May 07, 2004

Unlike the iconographic images from Vietnam - which were taken by photojournalists - the news these days is made by unknown amateurs.  The guys and gals with the press badges are controlled.  The embeds were in-bed with their protectors.  It's getting way too dangerous to venture out into some of the hot spots as a photographer - unless you want to have a photograph of yourself in captivity taken - again - by non-photographers.

They who live by the image, shall perish by same.  But don't expect the newsworthy image to come from the photojournalist.  Expect them to come from the terrorist, or the prison guard.  These are the new documentarians.  It began, a while back, with the onslaught of reality shows, of funniest home movies, of tapes made by kids doing insane tricks.  And it has infiltrated and slipped through the defenses of the most powerful nation on earth.

So, the result is this: Two years ago, Rumsfeld was one of the most popular guys in Washington.  The press corp loved his double talk.  He was, if memory serves, on a list of the sexiest people in the world.  Today, due to an onslaught of pictures, some taken by terrorists, some by unknown sources inside the Iraqi prison, Mr. Rumsfeld will have his head handed to him (on t.v. of course, generating more images) and the very course of the war will be forever changed.
