Cross Bronx Expressway, Bronx 2002

The "Cross Bronx" which bisected our neighborhood, and separated me from the hospital where I was born, and even from the public school that I went to (a few blocks to the left), was being built when I was in the third grade. We used to find dynamite caps in the rubble and detonate them. Several kids lost fingers that way.

If you look at the horizon, on the right is a housing project. This was across the street from where I lived on University Avenue. There was some irony to all this in that the Cross-Bronx, another shrine to the almighty car, actually ended up driving residents out to the suburbs as the neighborhoods it touched were destroyed.

And furthermore, as anyone who lives in New York knows, the term "expressway" and "Cross-bronx" is an oxymoron.
