1636 University Avenue, Apt. 1A. Joan's Room - Bronx, NY 2002

My sister Jean and I shared this room when I was six and she was four. Both beds had vinyl headboards with thin striated vertical stripes. Late at night, when the room was pitch black, we played a game we had made up.

You reached back behind you and ran your nails across the backboard, closed your eyes, and made a wish. The headboards contained some sort of magic. If you scratched in just the right way, and made a wish -- your wish would be granted. We often couldn't wait to get to sleep so that we could pray to the headboard Gods.

The most common wishes were to own either a Pizza Place or a Deli when we grew up -- neither of which ever happened.

I offer several Bronx photographs as Note Cards here
